Yorkshire will host one of the most spectacular global sporting events of 2014 when it plays host to the first two stages of the Tour de France. And we’re going to be there, providing maps of the route and how to get there… avoiding the inevitable congestion! See our latest Media Release 20140326 Get on Your Bike.
Yesterday SplashMaps helped kick-off the 100 days of festival in the run-up to the “Grand Depart”, journeying 300 miles to join 2000 very proud Yorkshire folk at the Harrogate International Conference Centre. Gary Verity, the charismatic chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire, introduced heros of races past and announced the legacy plans for an annual international race covering all areas of Yorkshire. He also stressed the ambition to make this “the greenest Grand Depart” ever. This is where our partnership comes in, providing a map that encourages spectators onto their bikes, using the Sustrans routes to cycle to the best vantage points and taking cars off the road.
For spectators and racers a-like, the map has to be lightweight, rainproof and easily stashable.
Our design was tested by the glamorous and the glorious. And it was great to share the stage with our partners at Steer Davies Gleave (Euan Mackay) to have our photos taken with the Tour de France Trophy.
Our Stage 1&2 Map series is not our first set of maps in the area. We have National Park Maps focusing on The North York Moors and the Dales with Settle and the Three Peaks. This latter SplashMap gives you the edge in the 3 Peaks Challenge as a map of the whole route & a hat are compulsory… 2 birds with one stone!
A great day and some glorious outcomes for SplashMaps as we gained the support of local businesses and shared our ambitions with the race organisers. Our unique product is destined to contribute to cutting congestion on the big days around the event.
