1. What is a SplashMap?

A washable, wearable, fully personalizable all weather map or neck warmer (Toob); a better map for the outdoors. Made from a special selection of fabrics, our maps are versatile, durable and lightweight, designed to take and survive the punishment that the outdoors can throw at a map: mud, wind, snow and rain.

2. Can I wash a SplashMap?

A SplashMap is a washable, wearable and all weather map. Hang on. We’ve already said that. Yes, you can wash a SplashMap and we don’t mean a delicate hand wash either, simply chuck it in your washing machine on a warm wash, following the symbols on the map’s side tab of course, and it’ll come out pristine and ready for the next time you take it outside.

3. Can I write or draw on a SplashMap?

Yes you can! We have had a lot of success with Crayola washable markers, though other brands are available. We would always recommend that you test the marker for removal beforehand as we cannot guarantee your beautiful product against every washable pen!

4. How can I buy a SplashMap?

It’s simple, just head over to the SplashMaps store. There you can browse through the full range of destination maps that we stock. If that’s not quick enough, take a look at our list of stockists where you can go and buy a SplashMap right now, assuming the shops are open that is.

5. What maps do you stock?

We have dozens of destination maps that we hold in stock, based around Great Britain’s National Parks and other places that are great for getting outdoors and into. We also hold city maps, long distance trail, central European destinations and Atlas scale maps.

6. I want my own map; can you make one for me?

We can do just that, just go to our personalised map maker and choose where you want on the planet. Give it a title and we’ll handle the rest for you.

7. I want a map of somewhere that isn’t in Great Britain, how about it?

No problem! Our plans for total tangible world map domination are in full swing and you can now make maps of anywhere in the world thanks to OpenStreetMap and Harper Collins. Check out our news section for the latest updates from the SplashMaps team.

8. I want more than one map for an event or a promotion; can you help?

Absolutely, bulk discounts are available through the site.  More than 40 units? Check our Trade pages for options and prices.  You can drop us an email to info@splashmaps.net and let’s talk.

9. I want my map to arrive somewhere else

No problem. Don't want someone sneaking a peak of your new delivery? Or want it to arrive at a friends place or holiday destination? At check-out you'll be asked if you want it delivered to the address you gave under billing details. Simply tick the box and and give an alternative delivery address.

10. I've ordered a SplashMap, how long before it arrives?

We want you to get your hands on your SplashMap and get outdoors as soon as you can.

  • If it's in stock it'll dispatch to first class mail within 2 working days.
  • If the site tells you "on backorder only", it will be on the next print run. The map will dispatch from our depot between 2 and 15* working days later.
  • Personalised maps dispatch in 7-15* working days.

*SPECIAL CHRISTMAS service means you can order as late as midday 12th December & it will be mailed 1st class on 21st December (last day of 1st class mail for Christmas). Back orders and personalised maps ordered after that date will dispatch from 16th January.

AUGUST SHUT DOWN - machines need a rest too sometimes. Ours take a break for the whole of August which will mean orders placed toward after 17th July or during August will be delivered in September.

We dispatch the entire order together, so if you have a Make-A-Map in your order, we will wait until that is available to dispatch your entire order.

If you really need that map critically or urgently super fast, let us know when you place the order or drop us a mail and we’ll do our very best to make you happy.

11. There’s a problem with my order, what do I do?

The SplashMaps team wants you to love your SplashMap and be perfectly happy with it. If your SplashMap has arrived at its new home and it’s damaged, it’s in poor condition or it wasn’t what you ordered, please send us an email at info@splashmaps.net as soon as you can, telling us what’s happened. Remember to state your order number in the email and put urgent in the subject line so we can spot it easily. We’ll do our very best to get back to you as soon as we can.

12. My payment failed, what do I do?

These things happen. Normally the payment fails because the billing details don't match the information your bank has. Please don't put your work address in the billing details if your using your personal card (unless you live at work like us!). Your billing address must be the same as that registered to your card.  Still won't work? Try the PayPal option.  This will give you the choice of paying via Credit Card or via a PayPal account. Still no luck? Sometimes it's the bank or our service that has not recognised a post code or zip.  So contact us on info@splashmaps.net. There's always another way to pay.

13. Refunds, returns, cancellations and exchanges; what’s your policy?

We want you to be happy with your SplashMaps order, but in the unlikely event that you do want to return any item you’ve ordered from us, we will give a full refund, excluding postage and packing, providing that the items are returned to us unused and in a fully re-saleable condition within 28 days of the date that we dispatched to you. Sadly, this only covers our destination maps, any personalised maps are not returnable unless they’re faulty.

Simply repack your item and pop it in the post to us at

SplashMaps Ltd,
25 Ashdown Close,
Chandlers Ford,
Hampshire,
SO53 5QF,
United Kingdom.

It’s a good idea to send your returned item using the Royal Mail’s signed for service as proof of posting or whatever equivalent service is available to you if you’re outside of the United Kingdom. If an item is faulty, damaged or doesn’t match the description of what you ordered we will refund the postage and packing as well.

We’re afraid that we can’t offer any refunds on items that are simply unwanted or damaged by you. We can also only refund faulty items within 10 days of the date that we dispatched them to you.

If you’ve any other questions, feel free to drop an email to info@splash-maps.com and we’ll do our very best to reply as soon as we can.

14. Where does the map on a SplashMap come from?

The data that helps us make SplashMaps comes from a number of sources.  In Great Britian the Ordnance Survey’s OS OpenData (https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/business-and-government/products/opendata-products.html) service is our main source. We combine this with data from OpenStreetMap (https://www.openstreetmap.org/) to make the features that you need outdoors appear on a SplashMap together with our special cartographic map style. For personalised maps, we also use Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale map data and OpenStreetMap for anything beyond Great Britain.

15. Ordnance Survey? OpenStreetMap? What are they?

The Ordnance Survey, often referred to as The OS, is Great Britain’s national mapping agency, which traces its heritage back to the mid 1700’s. Our maps aren’t that old and use the latest digital OS OpenData map data. OpenStreetMap is a totally open and free digital map that’s produced in a way similar to Wikipedia. After starting in 2004, OSM now maps almost every country in the world.

16. You keep saying Great Britain; don’t you mean the United Kingdom?

No we really mean Great Britain, which in turn means England, Wales and Scotland are the only countries you can get the Ordnance Survey 1:25k walking style map. The United Kingdom is Great Britain and Northern Ireland and for now we’re focusing on Great Britain, but see also FAQ number 7.

17. Your coordinates are weird and I like to deal in miles not kilometers

Sorry to hear that. We use UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) to express coordinates on the maps as they allow a uniform kilometer grid for anywhere in the world. This allows many of our customer to make simple distance calculations that relate to their zone under this system. Our system is accurate and you can convert to degrees and minutes simply using a service like this one.

18. What is a SplashMap made of?

Our weatherproof maps are made from a super special lightweight, breathable, durable and washable polyester. The Toobs (those with toggles and others) are from a dense stretchy polyester specially selected to hold an amazing map image. Our scarves are on satin - a lighter polyester with a softer touch and greater shear - it's very showy! Tablecloths and other special products are made from SplashTex. Look out for this. It's Europes only fabric 100% recycled polyester made from post consumer plastic bottles!

19. How can I protect my SplashMap from jealous people?

Your SplashMap is a highly desirable piece of tangible cartography. It’s very likely that people will covet your SplashMap. You might want to consider putting it in a safe overnight or fixing it to your desk with a Kensington lock. Either way, if you see someone eyeing your SplashMap just point them at our website so that they can get their own map.

20. My SplashMap is blank! Can you help me?

You might want to try turning it over.

21. My SplashMap has crashed my website/killed my cat/made it rain; what do I do?

Your SplashMap is a very special map, but in cases of website crashes, expired felines or sudden precipitation it’s probably an unfortunate coincidence.

22. I have a question that’s not answered here?

Get in touch with us at info@splashmaps.net, tell us what you need to know and we’ll let you know the answer.

23. Why do you collect data about me and what do you do with it?

We gather the necessary data from you in order to get the map you are after delivered to the right person and assure we've been paid enough to make that happen in the most effective way. We do this in compliance with the principles of the Data Protection Act regards handling personal data fairly and lawfully.

This data is then used internally from time to time in order to assess the health of the business for both internal understanding and in order to fulfil our obligations as a responsible Limited company.

We do not sell your data, share it or, in any way, give it away to 3rd parties.  That is not our business model.

We also gather data from you for on-going marketing campaigns.  This includes the sign-up to our design advice and news letters.  Customers can sign-up to either of these at their own choice.  In return they will have access to exclusive deals, news and map hints and tips.

We use a service which manages our mailing campaigns and allows simple de-registration of users from any of these lists.

Should the customer require we remove them from all campaigns or indeed be removed from all internal records at SplashMaps, please email info@splashmaps.net.

We will respond to your request within 2 working days with a time table of what action has and will be taken.  Once verified we will remove your data within 20 days.

For business analytical purposes your data is held for a period of 10 years after your most recent contact with SplashMaps to help assess the health of the business.

24. How up to date is the information on my SplashMap?

We combine data from a number of sources. For our fixed area destination maps we publish a date of the latest update as part of the Key Information on the product description. On this date we will have updated with the latest data from each of the sources. You can find the date of your map in the bottom right hand corner of your SplashMap.  To check the how up to date our open data sources for rights of way are follow this link.
